Which type of Angora is right for you?
Both French and English Angoras are wool rabbits. They share some similiarities such as a need for cooler condition, consistant grooming schedules and regularly providing hay in their diets. They have some differences as well which I will talk about below.
Size
French Angoras are bigger. These rabbits typically weigh 7-10 lbs. English Angoras weigh in at around 5-7.5 lbs. The size preference may matter to you. French can be used as dual purpose rabbits for meat and wool. You also can get a little more wool from each shearing with a bigger rabbit.
Grooming
English Angoras have a finer softer wool than French angoras. As such it mats easier than the french. Both types of rabbits can mat if they are kept in dirty cages or not groomed, but English Angoras do require more frequent grooming than the french. I typically groom my french about 1xs a week. With my english, I usually make sure to blow them out about 3xs a week when their coats are long. Both types of rabbits can be sheared short any time you know you are going to be too busy to keep up on grooming requirements. English angoras also have face fur on their cheeks, ears and top of the head while as french have clean faces, looking like a normal rabbit.
Personalities
Both breeds come from long lines of people breeding rabbits that are docile enough to tolerate grooming, so both breeds tend to be on the sweet and docile side. Of course how you raise your rabbit and how much you interact with your rabbit matters a lot in this. Here we try to handle every bunny, and get them used to some grooming before they leave just to give them a good foundation.
